North Merchiston Sport Club in Edinburgh

North Merchiston Club is a community sports and family activity centre in Edinburgh. It first opened its doors in 1921, and offers a wide range of activities, including table tennis, badminton, dance, martial arts and capoeira. It has four halls – two large, two small – a table tennis room, a kitchen and changing rooms.

In a bid to improve its energy efficiency and make savings, the club has been getting support from Resource Efficient Scotland (RES) for several years. A report from RES has helped them identify the areas of the building most in need of attention, and put in place a three-stage plan for refurbishing the site.

They have now finished stage one, which involved draught proofing, fitting LED lighting, and insulating the roofs, pipework and cylinders. Stages two and three will include double glazing and upgrading the heating system.

The club obtained estimates from RES for the stage one works, and were then able to use the report to apply for a Resource Efficient Scotland SME loan. They received the loan following a final inspection by RES.   So far the changes have resulted in energy savings of more than 27,000 kWh, 14 tonnes of CO2, and cost savings of £2,776.

Alistair Blamire, Board Member of North Merchiston Club, says, "Throughout this whole process we were ably assisted by RES and EST staff, who provided expert advice and guidance and allowed us to achieve our goals with seamless efficiency. Club staff and volunteers are delighted with the impact the works have already made to their working environment. We look forward to working with RES and EST in the subsequent phases of our energy saving programme."
