As part of its Carbon Management Plan, Renfrewshire Council has made a commitment to reduce its carbon footprint by 25% of its 2008 baseline by 2014. The Castle Semple Visitor Centre provided an ideal location; it attracts 80,000 – 90,000 visitors a year and could be used to raise awareness of energy efficiency and provide practical demonstrations of technologies.

The Castle Semple project has taken a phased approach, and installed measures over time. These measures include lighting controls, heating controls, an air source heat pump and solar panels. So far, for all the individual projects, the following key steps have been implemented:

  • Analysis of energy consumption and costs for each energy efficiency option
  • Identifying a specific area and considering a business case study for it
  • Tender for the individual technologies
  • Implementing the measures
  • Monitoring the energy use and success of these measures.
